Fire Safety – What YOU Need to Know
- Almost 60% of home fire deaths result from fires in homes without working smoke alarms (NFPA).
- Carbon monoxide is a leading cause of accidental poisoning in the US (CDC).
- Unattended cooking is #1 cause of cooking fires (NFPA).
- A Fire Department responds to a fire every 24 seconds in America (NFPA)
You can help protect yourself:
- Plan alternate escape routes ahead of time.
- If you cannot quickly and safely extinguish the fire, get out of the house and call 911.
- Invest in a Class A-B-C fire extinguisher for wood, paper, flammable liquid, and electrical fires. Learn how to use it. Remember PASS –Pull the pin; Aim low; Squeeze the lever; Sweep the nozzle from side to side.
- Set a calendar reminder to check all fire extinguishers and change smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries twice a year (e.g., When the clocks change).
