CERT Monthly Safety Tips
Turn Around, Don’t Drown
Floods cause more deaths each year than any of the other thunderstorm hazards. Over half of the deaths occur after driving into floodwater. The next highest cause is walking through or near floodwater.
Water’s force and power is often underestimated. Never drive around barriers on a flooded road, as the road surface may be compromised. Six inches of swift-running water can knock down an adult; 12 inches can sweep away cars; two feet can move larger vehicles.
If your car is trapped in rapidly moving water, stay inside your vehicle. Get on the roof if water is rising inside the car.
Remember:
- Floodwater depth can be deceptive.
- Hazards and deeper areas will be hidden.
- Once you drive into a flood, reversing out or turning around is often impossible. Your engine will most probably stall.
- Floodwaters may contain downed electrical lines, sewage, debris, sharp objects, snakes, and alligators.
